Aims

The workshop on membrane protein 2D crystallization and electron crystallography is aimed at PhD students and PostDocs, who are interested in the structure determination of membrane proteins by electron crystallography.

Topics

This workshop will cover all aspects of electron crystallography, including:

  • Membrane protein crystallization
  • Sample preparation for electron microscopy
  • Data collection by cryo-EM and electron diffraction
  • Computer image processing, with several software systems (MRC, 2dx, IPLT)
  • Data evaluation and model building

This workshop will introduce the new software systems IPLT and 2dx, and will also teach using the MRC programs.

Students will learn how to process 2D crystal images in 2dx, and how to process electron diffraction patterns in IPLT.

Program

The workshop will be divided into four blocks: Lectures (morning), hands-on practicals (afternoon), poster sessions (before dinner), and research talks (evening).

WELCOME TO THE ELECTRON CRYSALLOGRAPHY WORKSHOP AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DAVIS DAVIS CALIFORNIA

AUGUST 6TH TO AUGUST 11TH 2006

WORKSHOP REGISTRATION.

Workshop registration will take place in the lobby of the Dining Commons, Tercero Area from 4 pm onwards. After registration we have organized a welcome BBQ at Putah Creek Lodge from 7:00 – 10:00 pm. The venue is a short walk from the Tercero Area.

***For the workshop please bring along images (computer files, or negatives or prints) of crystallization trials, that you are having problems with, together with the conditions under which the trials were conducted. These pictures will be discussed and analyzed as part of the practical on day 1, to assist in troubleshooting.

REMINDER: COMPUTERS

If you bring your own portable computer to the workshop, running under Linux or Mac OSX (MacBook Pro dual-core Intels are almost as fast as the dual G5 desktop. The G4 Powerbook also works, just slower), then we can install the different software packages on your own computers and you can do the processing on your own machines. For OSX, the programs MRC, CCP4, Spider, Bsoft all work well. In order to run IPLT you need a Linux computer or partition. We also will have desktop computers in Davis during the workshop.

REMINDER: POSTERS

To encourage discussion we invite you to present a poster at the workshop. We have allocated 2 sessions for posters but we envisage that the posters will remain up for the entire week. The poster boards are ~ 8ft x 4ft, and should take two posters. Posters should therefore ideally be 4ft wide.

Accommodation

We have reserved rooms through the UC Davis Conference Housing. (http://www.confhsg.ucdavis.edu). Check – in SUNDAY 6th AUGUST after 12:00 pm (noon) with checkout on SATURDAY 12th AUGUST at 12:00 pm (noon). Alternative check-in arrangements can be made if prior notice is given.

The standard single rooms are located in Lysle Leach Hall within the TERCERO AREA that is a five minutes walk to the workshop in the Life Sciences Building (LSA 1022) (http://www.city.davis.ca.us/gis/ChooseMap.cfm). The rooms are arranged in groups of four or five with a shared bathroom/shower area.

The rooms are clean and comfortable and are comparable to student residence hall accommodation. Fresh linen is provided at the start of your stay and each day clean towels will be available at the check-in desk. Cleaning services are not provided. Leach Hall also has laundry facilities, a TV lounge and small kitchen areas for your use.

Unfortunately there are no telephones or Internet connection in the rooms. Telephone messages can be left at the service desk and will be posted on the notice board. All attempts will be made to contact guests in the case of an emergency. The telephone number for Leach Hall is 530/752-2900. We will have wired and wireless Ethernet network in the seminar area.

If you have any questions the service desk within your area is staffed between the hours of 6:30 am –11:00 pm
